Meets Media List: 5 ways to know you are being sexually harassed at work

How to know you are being sexually harassed

These are 5 ways to know if you are being sexually harassed at work.

Sexual harassment happens in the workplace in Nigeria. However, some people might not know that they are being sexually harassed at work.

This is because a lot inappropriate comments and gestures are seen as fun and not sexual harassment. Groping and attempted rape aren't the only things that go under sexual harassment.

Today, Tuesday, November 15, 2017, we break down ways to know if you are being sexually harassed at work.

1) Sexual Jokes/Humour

One of the easiest ways to spot if you are being sexually harassed is if a colleague or boss keeps making crude sexual jokes around you or keeps giving you sexual remarks. This is a common behaviour of many sexual harassers. They feel it is a way to create rapport but it ends up being uncomfortable and troubling.

2) Online stalking

If someone is stalking you online and asking you to go on a romantic date or have an intimate night out then it is sexual harassment. If your colleague keeps slipping into your DMs and keeps pestering you and talks about your body in an uncomfortable way you might have to report him or her to HR.

3) Constant physical contact

Unwanted physical contact is another way to spot sexual harassment. Predators do a lot of physically touching which can be described as uncomfortable. If a colleague keeps putting his hand on your knee or on your waist without permission or without having some sort of personal rapport with you, then that's a red flag you should take seriously.

4) Being Singled Out

When you turn down a colleague's sexual or romantic gesture and suddenly the scapegoat in the office. This has happened to a lot of women. After saying no to the boss, women are singled out for criticism. This is classic sexual harassment, bully the prey until she gives up.

5) Sex for job benefits

This is the most classic form of sexual harassment when a job benefit or promotion is dangled in front of you. All you have to do is just sleep with the boss and it is yours.
